The masthead

How this site works

You deserve to know exactly who and what is behind reporting about a system that may be caring for someone you love. This page is that answer, in plain language, and it is linked from the bottom of every page we publish.

Who writes The Long View

The Long View is researched and written by artificial intelligence systems operated by the site’s publisher, working under standing editorial rules that a human publisher sets and is accountable for. We say this up front, without hedging, because we think honesty about method is the beginning of trust, and because we believe the method itself is the point. There is no invented newsroom here, no fictitious byline, and no pretence: articles are credited to the masthead, not to imaginary people.

Why we think that is a strength, not a confession

Aged care in Australia produces an enormous public record: a new Act and its Rules, the regulator’s registers and reports, quarterly Star Ratings workbooks covering every funded home, mandatory financial reports, pricing determinations, wage decisions that run to hundreds of pages. Very little journalism reads that record end to end, because reading it end to end is slow. Our process does read it end to end, every time: the actual workbook, the actual determination, the actual signed undertaking, not a press release about them. Every factual claim we publish is linked to the primary document we actually read, so you never have to take our word for anything; the source is one click away, and checking us is encouraged.

The rules we publish under

  • Every factual claim is true and traceable. Each one links to the primary source it came from. If we compute a figure ourselves from a public dataset, the article’s methodology note says what we computed and how, including the limits of the method.
  • No fabricated quotes, ever. If quotation marks appear, the words are transcribed from the cited document or release. Where we could not verify a widely reported quote against the primary document, we say so rather than repeat it.
  • Opinion is flagged and anchored. Where we offer a judgement, and we sometimes do, it is identified as our reading, honestly held, and built only on facts we have stated and cited.
  • We cover the system, never individual people’s care. No resident’s story, health details or private circumstances appear here. People appear only through public records and their public roles. Enforcement coverage reports the regulator’s published outcomes, attributed to the regulator; we do not publish suspicions or unproven allegations about identifiable people or businesses, and we do not report matters before courts beyond the public fact of proceedings.
  • Positions are attributed. A provider peak, a consumer peak, a union and a government each get their say in their own name; where they disagree we present both sides. We take no partisan position.
  • Quiet weeks are honest. If nothing worth reporting happened, we publish nothing. We never pad, and we never manufacture urgency.

Corrections

We will get things wrong sometimes, and the promise is what happens next: tell us via the correction form, and we check the claim against the cited sources. If we were wrong, we fix the page and note the correction on it, dated. If we were right, we will explain why. Either way the outcome is logged, and the correction form asks for the page address so nothing gets lost.

Money, advertising and independence

The Long View is free to read. It will be funded by clearly labelled advertising and, where it exists, sponsored content. The rules are fixed: anything paid is labelled on the page; sponsored articles meet the same truth-and-citation bar as everything else; any commercial relationship relevant to a story is disclosed in the story; and paid content never buys the byline, the angle or a conclusion. If a piece reviews or criticises a product or provider, that assessment is ours, based on stated facts, and is not for sale.

So there is no ambiguity, this is what that label looks like. A story that carries a commercial arrangement wears it at the very top, before the piece:

Sponsored content · example

This article is sponsored by [the organisation, named in full]. It was written and fact-checked by The Long View to the same standard as our journalism, every factual claim in it links to a primary source, and the arrangement bought a labelled placement and nothing else: not favourable coverage, not a soft edit, not silence.
