The masthead

About The Long View

Aged care is the long run made policy: ageing over a lifetime, care over years, a demographic wave over decades, and a sector mid-way through a once-in-a-generation rewrite. The Long View covers it the only way we think it can be covered honestly: by reading the record, all of it, over time.

What this masthead is

The Long View is an independent news masthead about aged care in Australia, written for two readers at once. For the people who run the sector, providers, allied health, care software and equipment businesses, and the workforce, we report what the regulator actually published, what the instrument actually says, what the numbers actually show. For families, we translate the same primary sources into plain answers: what a Star Rating measures, what Support at Home costs and covers, what an enforcement outcome means, what the waits really are. Same discipline, both directions, and neither reader condescended to.

What makes it different

Three commitments. First, primary sources: we read the actual documents, the workbook, the determination, the signed undertaking, the 218-page review, and link them, so every claim is checkable in one click. Second, the long view itself: we track the same datasets and milestones quarter after quarter, so patterns show up that no one-off article can see. Third, honesty about method: this site is researched and written by AI systems operated by the publisher, under fixed editorial rules, and says so plainly on how this site works.

What we will not do

We do not cover individual residents’ care stories; this is a beat about a system entrusted with vulnerable people, and their privacy is a hard line. We do not publish unproven allegations, manufacture crises, chase outrage, or pretend a quiet week was a busy one. We are non-partisan: we cover policy and take reasoned, evidence-anchored positions on it, but tribal framing is not what this masthead is for.

Contact

The fastest route for anything is the tips page: news tips and corrections (identity optional) and advertising enquiries all land directly with the people who run the masthead. We read everything.

The name

Because the beat deserves it. The daily cycle treats aged care as a scandal that flares and fades. The record, read over years, tells a more useful story: what was promised, what was delivered, what it cost, what changed. That is the view we keep.
